In this article, the importance of the railway industry for the Russian economy is considered, and the factors that mostly affect the advantage of using freight transportation by rail compared to road transport are considered. The main indicators that can be used as a basis for analyzing the organization and efficiency of railway transport are identified. The factors influencing the efficiency of the functioning of the railway transportation system are considered. Based on the analysis of the main performance indicators of JSC "Russian Railways", the West Siberian Railway (WSR) and the East Siberian Railway (WSR), the dynamics of cargo loading and cargo turnover at the WSR and WSR are shown. The measures used to improve the efficiency of the use of a fleet of freight cars in solving the problem associated with the difficulty of exporting the planned cargo in the required time are considered. The target model of transportation under the project "Electronic train 2016-2020"is considered. The article also identifies the factors and conditions for reducing the delivery time of goods by rail, including the expediency of introducing an electronic document management system at enterprises engaged in railway transportation. The article considers a relatively new type of cargo delivery in containers and semi-containers by rail, its advantages and disadvantages.
