Abstract: 

The article presents methods and devices for protecting thyristor converters, including converters of AC electric rolling stock. The description of each technical solution and the principle of its operation is given, the advantages and disadvantages are indicated.

The results of the analysis of methods and devices for protecting thyristor converters were used in the development of a method for improving the performance of rectifier-inverter converters of modern rolling stock in the regenerative braking mode. In this method, the positive qualities were taken into account and the disadvantages of the previously proposed technical solutions aimed at the protection and functional diagnosis of thyristor converters were excluded.
